Designer: Celia Arias
Celia Arias started her career as a professional dancer turned designer who has been crafting clothes for women all over the world for the past 10 years. Born in Argentina, raised in the United States, with a Masters degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology - her life as a trained designer has allowed her to combine rich cultures, languages and experiences to create Vivey®. It all started with a bespoke clothing line in Buenos Aires that fused fashion with activewear, and brought change to the way women dressed for social dance. From that first endeavor in fashion, Celia has worked with hundreds of clients around the world: listening, fitting, laughing and crying with them. She found in them, the healing she needed to love and learn from her own body. The desire to develop Vivey® came from longing to connect with more women and dress all walks of life, not just dancers. Today she jumps at the chance to change the way a woman dresses for her shape and loves giving away her styling secrets.

Q+A
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A FASHION DESIGNER?

My absolute favorite thing is to make a woman happy. Yes of course I love the process of drawing and coming up with something, cutting and making it and trying it out… I love making patterns and am a process at heart. But nothing compares to the moment when a client tries something on and falls in love.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A FASHION DESIGNER?

My absolute favorite thing is to make a woman happy. Yes of course I love the process of drawing and coming up with something, cutting and making it and trying it out…I love making patterns and am a process at heart. But nothing compares to the moment when a client tries something on and falls in love.

I am obsessive about fit and making things functional, so when women try pieces on and get excited because they feel surprisingly great and its something they will really wear, that’s when I feel like I’ve done my job and my service to my fellow sisters. When clients come back and tell me about the compliments they have received and how good they feel, then I feel good for helping a woman feel good. There’s already so many clothes that don’t make women feel good… I hope I’m creating something different.

WHAT HAS BEEN MY BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

I am a creative person, and I also love business and running an office and being administrative. But when I have to combine both types of thinking, often simultaneously, well.. that can be frustrating. I try my best not to look like a scrambled mess, so I don’t worry my team or scare my interns away.  Also, in fashion your survival comes down to the numbers (aka sales). And for me every piece I make has a story or a reason for being. I can tell you the story of creation, why I made it, what I made it for, why I picked that fabric, how you can use it..  so it’s sad when maybe an item isn’t depicted well in a photo and it ends up undersold or misunderstood. I have a relationship with each piece and wear my clothing everyday, so the things that are obvious to me may not be obvious to the outside eye. My challenge is to get better at explaining a piece and show all the ways you could wear it. Hopefully I’m getting better.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION?

Absolutely everywhere. A movie, a girl on the train, a song, a dance performance, a conversation with a friend...But most often my pieces stem from what I feel I’m missing. I think about what I really really want, then I make it and wear it. If I get complemented on the street (which happens a lot) then I know I’m onto something. I rarely design something just from drawing a sketch or 2dimensional thinking. I insist on making clothes that I will wear out and that hopefully my clients will too. I feel very strongly about how many clothes there are on the market today, so if I’m not in love with a design or don’t feel that its super functional and we wouldn’t get a lot of value out of it, then I won’t make it. My boyfriend tells me all the time that the price of an item goes down by 1/2 every time you wear it, so I try to make things that you will wear so much it ends up being virtually free. :)

WHY DID I BECOME A DESIGNER?

The truth is I was a manager at a major retail store when I needed a break from the dance world. I knew I loved fashion and sewing but wasn’t crazy about the corporate ladder. So I took an aptitude test thinking that I would be told to study fashion management or business or merchandising. I was told I should be a designer. I was so shocked I took it again, being more careful with my answers the second time. Still got designer. So that made me question myself. I had been sewing and sketching since I was little so why did I doubt in my ability to be a designer? I realized I was intimidated by the fashion world and the idea of it, so I decided to challenge my own fears and study design. I loved it of course and later naturally combined my love for dance and movement and the need to have things fit perfectly with my designing skills, and that’s how my current brand was born.
