In 1889 Nellie Bly circumnavigated the globe in 72 days, beating the fictional character from Jules Verne's Around the World In 80 Days just 16 years after its publication. Each of the pieces in this line are based on the types of objects we imagine Nellie encountered during her travels.

Nellie Bly was a journalist and explorer in the mid-late 1800s. She launched her career boldly by purposefully getting committed to a women's mental institution in New York City. She thereafter penned an exposé on the abuses she witnessed inside; she is widely considered to be the first American investigative journalist.

She soared to international fame when she set out to circumnavigate the globe faster than Phileas Fogg, the fictional protagonist in Jules Verne's Around the World In 80 Days. Nellie departed from New Jersey and journeyed by train, boat, and burro. She returned 72 days, 6 hours, and 11 minutes later.

"The pieces in this line are reflective of treasures one might encounter when traveling the globe. Although our pieces don't date back to Nellie Bly's time, they are all the types of things that she surely would have seen. This collection is a tribute to exploration. It is meant to inspire the adventurer in all of us." - Libby B.K.

THE ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY
We're just getting started, but we've got big plans. So far we're working on getting all of the Sterling Silver from 100% recycled sources. Already, the packaging for each piece is made from 100% post-consumer recycled products. We'd like to get to a point where all of our inputs are recycled material, and all of our energy comes from renewable resources... We're not quite there yet, but yes, it's on the top of our agenda.

All of the labor that goes into our products is based right here in New York. As much as possible, we purchase all of our supplies from local merchants.

As we grow, we'll be partnering with community organizations at every chance we get.

THE WHY
Jewelry is different than the rest of what we use to decorate our bodies. Unlike clothing, we don' t need it to stay warm. Unlike shoes, we don't need it to protect our feet.

For most of us, we wear jewelry because it has some kind of meaning. We were given it as a gift by someone who cares about us, or we purchased it from a place that has a significance we want to remember. Perhaps we pass it down through our families, or we give it to ourselves as a sign of our own capabilities.

There is also something deeply feminine about jewelry. It's not that men don't wear jewelry, it's just that women wear more. Nearly every woman wears some piece of jewelry, nearly all of the time.

This combination of jewelry as deeply meaningful and deeply feminine led me to launch Libby BK. I hope that women will give and receive these pieces and pass along the stories and the courage that go with them. I hope that these pieces will be a means for women to share the journeys of other women and to add their own, to both give and receive strength and inspiration.

I hope you like what I've got so far. This is just the beginning.
