Oroceo Castro
Designer Story
Oroceo Castro is a Melbourne-based label with a ladylike, polished and preppy aesthetic. My name is Paolo and I am the founder and designer. My sister is Ginny and she is the design consultant as well as the brand stylist. We were born in the Philippines and this provided us with an innate sense of exuberance.

We lived in Perth, which instilled a sense of chic nonchalance in us and we now call Melbourne home so we have developed a thirst for pushing artistic boundaries. We incorporate all of these into our designs. We believe that fashion exists to inspire and that is what we are aiming to do through our brand.

Q+A
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A FASHION DESIGNER?

The way it allows me to channel my creativity towards something that can make people feel good about themselves as well as inspire others.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

Organising the time to do everything. There's always something that needs to be done - patterns to be finalised, bookkeeping to be updated, social media, the next collection.. the list goes on. I am a very hands on person but as much as I want to do everything myself, I realise that to delegate tasks is essential to run a business.

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION?

Usually from the arts and the places I've travelled to or lived in. My first collection was inspired by portrait paintings of the Dutch golden era and traditional Filipino love songs. My next collection is inspired by Gothic architecture. I love visiting art galleries and museums because they're great sources of inspiration. However, inspiration can come from anywhere.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A DESIGNER?

I've always credited my sister for inspiring me to be a designer. I've always known that I've got the flair for the arts but growing up seeing my sister express herself through clothing really fascinated me. Also, I've always had strong opinions (that I usually keep to myself) about how people dress themselves, so I thought why not start my own label?
