WHAT GOT YOU INTO FASHION BLOGGING?

I first set up my blog in 2010. I guess it was my enthusiasm for fashion, faith in the power of originality, and passion for emerging designers. I used to be a fashion marketer and visual merchandiser for a few brands such as Ralph Lauren and TSE New York. I have a feeling that bloggers from all over the world are doing more or less the same thing. Being conscious of my Chinese heritage, I tend to make my blog unique and genuine by specializing myself in oriental-inspired fashion with eastern motifs cross-fertilizing western styles which brings an exotic feel to it. You will find my blog exceptionally different from the majority of bloggers’ in terms of style, themes and choice of topics.

WHAT IS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF YOUR BLOG?

I’ve set myself the mission of exploring the emerging fashion markets in the East and bringing any potential Asian designers, especially Hong Kong designers to the world’s attention since I started blogging 4 years ago. Considering that their lack of financial resources is always a major obstacle for many prodigious young Asian/Hong Kong designers to moving their career goals one step forward, I feel an urge to spread the word about the best up-and-coming designers from Hong-Kong,China,Japan, Korea, etc. and make the name of our future design stars known, and their works seen as their talents deserve to be valued. That paved the way for the launch of my September’s debut New York Asian Fashion Week Extravaganza – fashion show(https://www.facebook.com/newyorkasianfashionweekextravaganza) initiated and organized in the name of my blog. In addition, my blog aims at providing a platform for fashionistas to comment on their favorite oriental/ethnic/folklore designs and express their views on fashion of an oriental theme. Followers are encouraged to leave words about what they think “orientalism” may possibly mean, and what necessary elements should be there to make it oriental fashion.

WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF HAVING YOUR BLOG?

The most exciting part lies in heaps of opportunities to travel to different places and meet up with some most brilliant creative talents from all over the world that have come to me, which have broadened my scope of horizons in fashion, art and culture. Also, the satisfaction and happiness of being the first one to discover and share hidden fashion treasures are beyond words.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING?

To maintain authenticity and genuinity of the blog without turning it into another advertising platform for brands.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA?

By traveling, my annual overseas fashion trip – FashionCamp Milano in 2011, International Fashion Days in Kiev, Ukraine in 2012, a visit to and an interview with Hollywood’s celebrated up-and-coming Swiss couture designer Stephanie Burkhalter in her studio in Milan last year, and the latest New York Asian Fashion Week Extravaganza has inspired me to consistently come up with some exclusive and one-of-a-kind subject matter for my blog. My next stop in 2015 is Paris Fashion Week.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT HONG KONG FASHION?

Dynamism, creativity, designers’ unreserved devotion, dareness, and what’s more, a particular role that played by the impact of east-meets-west culture as a result of postcolonialism on one’s design.

WHO IS YOUR READER?

My readers are those who know exactly what style suits themselves best and will never follow trends too much. Trends fade but style stays.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE SHOW DURING SPFW?
My favorite show was the brand Cavalera. Much like their parades, Cavalera always has some surprise and the scenery is always beautiful.

WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF SHOOTING FASHION WEEK?
The most exciting part is when the world-famous models enter the parade, such as, Gisele Bundchen. Their attitude in the parade infects everyone, even us photographers.

WHAT IS THE MOST STRESSFUL PART?
The most stressful part are the queues we face for the major brands. There is always a large number of photographers and the queue is large.

ANY NEW MODELS TO PAY ATTENTION TO?
Models that stood out in this latest edition were Waleska Gorczevski, Amanda Sanchez, Cristina Herrmann, and Carolina Melchior.

WHICH DO YOU PREFER AND WHY – BACKSTAGE OR RUNWAY?
I loved the environment backstage, but what I really loved most were the shows. I think every show is very different. The Designers brought surprises and always tried to do something unique. That allowed me to take very creative photos. Both Runway and Backstage allowed me to create very beautiful photos.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A PHOTOGRAPHER?
What made me become a photographer was the love I have for photography and art. Being able to work with what we really love is amazing. Every day is a discovery and I see how the picture makes us a better person. Photography has a power beyond what we imagine. I can not say that I choose the photograph, but that the picture chose me.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM SHOOT TO DO?
My dream is to photograph fashion week in New York; I find the parades amazing. Of course, I have many other dreams, such as photographing fashion campaigns of internationally renowned brands.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT FASHION IN SAO PAOLO?
The Sao Paolo fashion week is special beyond their parades with reputable brands in the fashion market, has the presence of many top models as well as beginners models that stand out after a parade. Despite some problems I think Sao Paolo is one of the main fashion week in the world, I think the fashion market in Brazil is growing far beyond the Brazilian models always be among the best in the world.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST SHOOT YOU EVER DID?
I took behind the scenes photographs at fashion week. I always try arriving to an event early in order to learn more about the models and to adapt myself into the environment.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANY STARTING OUT PHOTOGRAPHERS?
The advice I would give to photographers who are beginning would be to seek contacts with people linked to fashion. That way you have an opportunity to create a fashion portfolio. After that, things tend to happen of course, but that all depends on your dedication and commitment; as in everything in life.
