Jolie van Dijk – Fresh Face to Watch on the Runway @ Amsterdam Fashion Week July 2016

Amsterdam Fashion week has kicked off with a very stylish start and a perfect blend of familiar faces and up and coming emerging designers. In the model scene a fresh face to watch returns to the runway for her second season of shows is porcelain skinned Jolie van Dijk who was elegant and glowing in both Dennis Diem’s  Runway Show  and Karim Adduchi’s Runway Show.

This model was discovered at 15 by Dutch Fashion Photographer Giusy de Ceglia who is known for spotting unique new faces. She was taken with Jolie’s unique features and her presence. She has both a sweetness (in real life as well as showing through on the runway) and a sophistication. A classic model with a bit of an edge that looks as if she is a blend of The classic Teen Vogue girl with the Nylon edgy fashion forward girl.

Dennis Diem is one of Amsterdam’s Fashion Scene icons. This season he presented a 1950’s reminiscent collection called “Sweet Rebel” inspired by the movie “Crybaby”.  Crybaby tells the classic tale of the good girl / bad boy romance. The “good girl” feminine innocence was captured in soft ruffles, delicate dresses, lace, and pastels. This was balanced with the “rebel side” with boys on motorcycles and girls in black lace up leather corsets.

Diem honors the craft of fashion by creating beautiful and ethereal women’s clothing using traditional and handmade methods. One of his signature designs is his handmade corsets inspired by Marie Antoinette’s original corsets. He loves the way a woman’s presence and energy changes the second her posture does as she puts on a corset. The ability of the corset to change and sculpt the female form into as feminine a shape as possible also changes her self presentation and brings out a strong power.

Among the models at Dennis Diem is Amsterdam Model Jolie van Dijk. One of the freshest and newest faces to watch this season on the runway.

Top Dutch Fashion photographer Giusy de Ceglia takes us both backstage and on the runway during Amsterdam Fashion Week July 2016.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHICH MODEL WEARS WHAT LOOK?

I don’t choose my models only on their looks but also on their presence, energy and how they look in a public place. Every look is special customized for each model.

WHAT DO YOU DO BACKSTAGE TO ENERGIZE MODELS  FOR THE RUNWAY BEFORE EVERYONE GOES ON?

This is a process, it already starts in the morning. I make sure that I connect with every model and give them al personal love / attention and comfort. This is something that builds up the whole day.

WHAT MUSIC DID YOU PLAY AT YOUR SHOW?
The music at my show was a combination of old-school nostalgic music from the 80’s and urban. The mix was made by the talented DJ RobManga.

WHAT NEW MODELS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THIS SEASON?

Im very excited about all the models who participated at my show. But especially Jolie van Dijk, she has a classical look but her presence is modern and contemporary.

WHAT TIME DID YOU GO TO BED THE NIGHT BEFORE YOUR SHOW?

I always try to go to bed early the whole week before the show, I know I need to save a lot of energy for the big day. Unfortunately the last day before the show I always sleep very late, I only had two hours of sleep.

ANY CRAZY MOMENTS LEADING UP TO THE SHOW (i.e. A MODEL NO SHOW, MISSING ACCESSORY, ETC)

Everything went smoothly. My preparations are always months before the show, this wil prevent a lot of chaos and hectic moments backstage.

WHAT DID YOU DO THE NIGHT AFETR YOUR SHOW?

I had a fresh and delicious homemade dinner made by dear friends.

WHAT GOES THROUGH YOUR HEAD RIGHT BEFORE THE SHOW AND RIGHT AFTER?

Before the show I feel a lot of happiness and excitement. There is a great energy on the moment when all the models, hair crew, make-up crew and dressers arrive. This is an amazing crew to create the show with. Afterwords I feel satisfied because we worked hard to make something beautiful and the enthusiasm of the audience/the guests makes it complete.

NOW THAT IT’S ALL OVER, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE PAST WEEK?

I love the fitting, casting and the show was great, but my most favorite part was when the models arrived for their first rehearsal, double checking how everything looks and will turn out.

WHAT IS YOUR NEXT PLAN TO MERGE ART AND FASHION OR YOUR NEXT ARTISTIC PLAN?

I’m working on a project with fashion and art. I can’t tell a lot about it right now but it will be a celebration and tribute to fashion in a big fashion city.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE FOR YOU RIGHT BEFORE A RUNWAY SHOW AND RIGHT BEFORE AN ART EXHIBIT PRESENTATION?
DOES EACH MEDIUM FEEL DIFFERENT RIGHT BEFORE IT IS EXPOSED – SHOWN TO THE WORLD?

A runway show and an exhibit presentation are two different disciplines but feel the same. It’s about creating a new world and concept that you can share with other people. I love to inspire people, so emotionally I’m sharing the same feeling.

WHAT COMES NEXT NOW?

I’m curating and creating a new concept for a fashion exhibition from young talented designers, and I’m planning my next performance/runway in a big city.

INTERVIEW

WHAT WAS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF AMSTERDAM FASHION WEEK?
Doing the runway wearing all those stunning designer clothes.
It’s such an excitement and a honor to be allowed to do that. Makes you feel really special and beautiful.

WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF MODELING?
Having the chance to shine on the runway – and later on when all the publications come out.
You can step out of your daily routine for a while and become someone else. And I can’t wait to travel, meet new people and make new experiences.

WHAT’S THE MOST DIFFICULT?
You can’t really show your emotions when you’re doing the runway or while they take photos of you backstage.

WHAT GOES THROUGH YOUR HEAD WALKING DOWN THE RUNWAY?
I’m super excited and happy, enjoying that very special moment and knowing I’ll see my photos later on all those amazing and lovely websites. It’s surreal.

WHAT WENT THROUGH YOUR HEAD DURING THE FIRST SHOW YOU WALKED?
I was a little nervous of course, but was so worth it! They were the most amazing twenty seconds I’ve had in a while.
And in those twenty seconds the only two things I felt were excitement and happiness.

WHAT PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR AFTER FASHION WEEK?
I’m going to work on my portfolio. Afterwards I’m hoping to go international.

WHICH LOOK FROM THE RUNWAY WAS YOUR FAVORITE, AND WHY?
The first outfit by the amazing Aziz Bekkaoui, that I got the honor to wear opening his show at Amsterdam Fashion Week.
It was such an awesome cool outfit and I loved the shoes.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNERS?
Actually I don’t have any ‘favorite’ designers, because I pay more attention to the clothing itself than the name on the label.
So I like various outfits from many different designers – but if I really had to choose I’d say Tommy Hilfiger, Jean Paul Gaultier, Oscar de la Renta, Coco Chanel, Valentino and Ralph Lauren.

WAS THERE ANY ROUTINE THAT YOU DID TO HELP YOU BEFORE YOU WENT ON THE RUNWAY TO PREPARE FOR THE SHOW?
To be honest with you, none in particular. Before a show I just try to stay calm and relaxed.
If I start thinking too much about it, I know it will go wrong.

ARE YOU WORKING ANY MORE RUNWAYS BESIDES AMSTERDAM FASHION WEEK? IF SO WHICH ONES ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO ATTENDING?
I started modeling just a few months ago and Amsterdam Fashion Week has been my first amazing experience. Got the honor to open for Aziz Bekkaoui and was booked for the beautiful show of Dorhout Mees as well. Things have gone really fast, but I’m loving it!!
Next it would be awesome to walk in Milan and Paris. Have heard from my agent there has been interest already, so I can’t wait to move onto the next step of this adventure.

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU START MODELING?
It all happened when I less expected it. A friend of mine who wanted to be a model asked me to take her to an Elite Model Look casting in our area last summer. Once we got there, she came up with the idea to make me sign up for it too, since I had nothing to lose anyway.
So I did and ended up in the finals. They didn’t offer me a contract, but that’s where I met Giusy de Ceglia, my current agent.
We clicked right away and it all went really fast. She met my parents and they were just as enthusiastic as I was. I signed a contract with Giusy and ever since I’ve had the most amazing model agency ever!

WHAT IS YOUR SKINCARE REGIME? WHAT HOLY-GRAIL PRODUCTS/METHODS DO YOU LIVE BY?
I remove my make-up with clean water. That takes all of your make-up off and it’s refreshing.
After I use a cleaning product from Lancôme and as final touch I put some night cream on my face.

HOW DO YOU STAY HEALTHY AND KEEP YOUR BODY IN SHAPE?
I drink a lot of water and juices and also sport often.
It’s really important to remove your make-up at the end of the day and avoid using cheap products that could irritate your skin.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANY STARTING OUT MODELS?
Keep your mind sharp and do not get easily nervous or carried away. If you expect too much or overestimate yourself, things will definitely go wrong. At the same time you must believe in yourself, otherwise you’ll fail. The most important thing is to be yourself and not try to change at any cost – You’re beautiful the way you are!

HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING WITH GIUSY DE CEGLIA?
It’s been amazing! Giusy is such a lovely and caring person – and she always knows what’s going on. She is not just my ‘agent’ but also a true friend, because besides the modeling part she also really cares about how I feel. That’s what makes her special and different form a ‘normal’ agency. I think we have achieved a lot together over the past few months, thanks to her one-on-one approach. I’m currently the only model she is representing, which means she can fully focus on my development  – besides her main work as a professional fashion photographer of course.

The most exciting part of being a designer is… “Creating your own world, your wildest dreams – and realizing that you have a keen esthetic eye and talent that can surprise myself, my peers, friends and followers by creating.”

YOU REALLY DO MERGE FASHION AND ART AS A DESIGNER IN MANY MEDIUMS – HOW DO THE DIFFERENT MEDIUMS COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER
BOTH IN TERMS OF YOUR CREATIVITY AND IN TERMS OF THE END RESULT?

The mediums may be different, the inspiration and message are the same. I use design and fashion in my performance art pieces, and get inspired by daily life for my couture collections. I show my collections through strong and focussed performance pieces, and so the circle is round.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION? AND HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED SEASON AFTER SEASON?

Cities/street life used to be my main inspiration, but the city centers in the Western World like New York, Paris and Amsterdam are becoming the new suburbia, flooded by tourists and obsessed by consuming. I live in Amsterdam’s city center and still love parts of NYC, but I diversified my sources of inspiration: on line, street life in new centers like Beirut, Tanger and Istanbul, and in my own mind. The latter is an infinite source – that will only stop at the end of my days. Still much more to come, I live quite healthily……..

WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF BEING A DESIGNER?

Creating your own world, your wildest dreams – and realizing that you have a keen esthetic eye and talent that can surprise myself, my peers, friends and followers by creating.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST PIECE YOU EVER MADE?

It was a chair on my 6th birthday. My parents loved it.

WHAT PIECE HAVE YOU DESIGNED THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?

An impossible question – hence easy to answer because I just picked one of my many favorites, for an artist I love: the big dress I created for Marina Abramovic’s amazing performance at the MOMA in NYC.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BRING TOGETHER DIFFERENT ART FORMS?

Your can better ask: what forced you to do it! I think in images, in designs, in colors, in patterns. It’s impossible not to mix those millions of impressions I have accumulated in my head throughout my career.

HOW HAVE YOU GROWN AS A DESIGNER SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

Absolutely still growing each day. My best work is yet to come.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WANTED TO BE A DESIGNER?

Always knew that this was my calling – so it was not a real choice. But on the Arnhem Art School (ARTEZ) I started to realize I had some talent – which can be helpful when one wants to become a designer.

WHO INSPIRES YOU THE MOST?

Marcel Duchamp, who by giving us a new kind of art liberated all contemporary creators. This new art not only triggered the eyes, but the imagination and the intellect as well.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR STARTING OUT DESIGNERS?

Be honest, work hard and don’t get too excited about fame, fashion, glitter and glamour. If you’re a true designer this recipe will lead to a fulfilling career.

WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF FASHION WEEK? AND WHAT’S THE MOST STRESSFUL?

The most exciting part: to see, right after the show, on the faces of the people I admire the reflection or their thoughts, their questions, their love.

The most stressful: how to capitalize on my new designs, in order to create the next collection. People with good business propositions to the front of the line please.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO RELAX/CELEBRATE AFTER THE SHOW?

My good friend Gert will cook a Dutch – Moroccan meal for me and my team: Boerenkool (Kale) with mashed potatoes and Moroccan Merquez sausages. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.Yoga also helps, but Boerenkool/Merguez helps better.
